I always like to encourage people to make the pilgrimage back to the family home where their ancestors lived. It offers a perspective of both time and place. SMALL JOURNEY HOME

Stubbornly it still squats there.

Through sixty years of nature’s drain

And man’s neglect, the old square

Two-story shell

Determines to remain.

And now, my first and final return

Is pulling my lifetime together.

Shadows of memories

Clear as bold etchings

Will hold claim on this place forever.

From innocent days, unmarred

by pain,

Come ghosts of love that smile and then,

Reach down to softly touch my head

And we walk well-known paths again,

Before all time had fled.

Here, where tenderness abounds,

Sorrow has become unreal.

Here at last a peace is found

To help a family’s youngest soul

Less loneliness to feel.
